I have just got back to Sydney from San Francisco, having heard about HSB on OTR (via internet streaming) back in July and deciding that getting to it was an absolute must!

What an extraordinary 3 days it was! Highlights for me are way too many to mention, but included Little Feat right at the end, a blistering Allmanesque version of "The Road Goes on Forever" (Robert Earl Keen / Rich Brotherton), Ricky Scaggs and Kentucky Thunder, and a mesmerising version of "The Weight" by Gillian Welch, Emmylou and Old Crow Medicine Show late on the Saturday. Then there was Allen Toussaint, Earl Scruggs, Guy Clark, Booker T, etc, etc...

I saw one guy walking around wearing a Rhythms T-shirt. Was that you?

Cheers

Hi there Brian

loving the updates hope you are having a great time (we are all jealous). Off to Narooma this weekend to catch Charlie Musselwhite, Candy Kayne and of course Cederic Burnside and Lightin Malcolm. You missed a great gig at Baz's, Charles was in great form and Davey Lane was teriffic (he looks about 12 years old!). Caught up with Rob and Richard there, we are all following your blog. Any way just wanted to let you know that I am really enjoying reading about your exploits. Take Care

I am indeed more optimistic than many about the future of music journalism, though there's every reason to believe that not much of it will involve tree-killing. And i doesn't have to.

No Depression didn't reach it's end because of r a lack of circulation (few pubs ever do)_ but because there was no longer an advertising base, the fundamentallsource of revenue. And that had everything to do with the general environment, almost nothing to do with the magazine's quality as such.

In any case, that was an interesting AMA discussion at times, if maybe more somber than energizing, but I should clear up that I wasn't the one with the "who says they won't read long form pieces online?" question. That was someone else, possibly journalist Geoffrey Himes, who was sitting near me

To follow your theme:

Critics rating-
Australian, really depressing & about junkies (as long as Heath or Cate play the junkies) +4

If you put the same equation in front of a film funding body- +10

Get Jim Schembri to review above scenario- -4

Personal rating-
Matthew McConaughey to star- -8

George Lucas to produce the sequel to the prequel to the sequel (does that make it it's own uncle, nephew or father?) of Star Wars- -4

CD ratings:
Your good self reviewing a Bob or Neil album- +2 (am I being conservative?)

Jeff Jenkins reviewing a Bruuucce album- +6

cheers
