Off The Record

About

brian1.JPGBrian Wise presents the music/interview program Off The Record each Saturday morning on 102.7 Triple R-FM in Melbourne, Australia. You can hear it from 10.00am until midday (AEST) or streamed at www.rhythms.com.au. The program is a four-time winner of the Best Music Program award from the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia.

Brian is also the Contributing Editor for Rhythms Magazine (which he started in April 1992) and he is also the magazine’s Online Editor. Rhythms is Australia’s premier roots music magazine.

Brian also presented Dig On The Radio with Michael Mackenzie during summers on the ABC from 2003 – 2006 and was also a contributor to the Dig! website.

From 1997 to 2003 Brian was Editor of the Australian version of Addicted To Noise (later to become Big Pond Music) and is twice winner of the national ONYA award for Best Online Music Magazine.

In order to convince people that he really is a worthwhile member of society (and to pay the mortgage) Brian teaches Radio to one class each year at Holmesglen College Of TAFE. Three of his former students – Nerida, Elise and Pat – survived relatively unscathed and have become valuable members of the Off The Record team.

In his spare time, Brian likes to ride his BMW R1150RS motorcycle to faraway places – though the places have become increasingly nearer in the past year. In 2005, he took a BMW K12ooLT (that’s the really big one) – and his partner Karen – from Los Angeles to Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, Las Vegas, The Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and Flagstaff, Arizona. He came within 60 miles of Winslow, Arizona and resisted the urge to make a detour so he could say he stood on a corner there. During this trip he learned one of life’s most valuable lessons: never ask a woman to throw away a pair of shows because your motorcycle is overloaded. Later this year, he hopes to ride along the Pacific Coast Highway down to Big Sur.

    Hi there Brian –

Mark Demetrius here. As you’ll (hopefully) remember, I used to be a regular contributor to Addicted To Noise. I’ve recently come back to live in Sydney after 5 1/2 years in London, and am very keen to start writing here again.

There’s a Robert Johnson tribute night coming up here, at The Vanguard in Newtown, on Wednesday March the 14th. It’s called Robert Johnson : A Night At The Crossroads, and will apparently feature solo and colaborative renditions of his songs by various musos including Dom Turner (Backsliders), Jeff Lang, Matt Walker, Ash Davies and Peter Doyle (Hawaiian Housewreckers). Perhaps you’d be interested in a gig review ?

Please let me know if you’d like me to do that or anything else for Rhythms, whether on paper or online.

My email address is markjdemo@hotmail.com, and my phone number is (02) 9358 2050.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Cheers,

    Mark Demetrius
